Does Spotify Free Work With Sonos

Sonos is a music system that lets you stream Spotify music to several rooms of the house. Locally stored tracks can be streamed, as can tracks from online radio stations and streaming music services such as — you guessed it — Spotify. Each room could be playing a different Spotify track at the same time, streamed from the same Premium account! Spotify Free on Sonos lets you shuffle the entire Spotify catalog. It also features 15 on-demand playlists, including playlists like Discover Weekly, Release Radar, and Daily Mix, as well as.

For example, if you begin playing Spotify on your S2 system, playing from the same Spotify account on your S1 system will stop playback on your S2 system,’ explains Sonos on its help page.

Until now, the only way to get Spotify working on a Sonos speaker was to pay for a Premium subscription, but that's about to change.

Work For Free

As Engadget reports, all Sonos speakers (as well as collaborations between Sonos and Ikea) will be able to stream music through a free Spotify account. Once you update the Sonos app, navigate to the Settings menu, select Music & Content > Add a Service and link your free Spotify account.

After that, you can stream through Sonos' app, Spotify's app via Spotify Connect, and use Google Assistant to start a Spotify playlist if your Sonos speaker, such as the Sonos One, has voice control. While Alexa is also available on Sonos devices, it cannot yet control free Spotify accounts.

Currently Spotify has 248 million monthly active users, but only 113 million pay for Spotify Premium, the company says. So this move could get many more Spotify listeners into the Sonos ecosystem ahead of Black Friday and the holiday shopping season.

Spotify has confirmed that users can now stream its free services across Alexa-powered devices, as well as Sonos, and Bose. Spotify took to their blog to announce that free users in Australia, New Zealand and the US will be able to ask Alexa to play 'Today’s Top Hits', their 'Discover Weekly', or a custom-made playlist on their Amazon Echo or Fire TV. Spotify further revealed that users can also set up Spotify Connect with their Sonos speakers directly from the Spotify app. They also mentioned that one can connect it to the Symfonisk Ikea WiFi Speaker, integrated with the Sonos Home Sound System, to play their desired music.

Furthermore, Spotify revealed that the service can now streamed through Bose smart speakers and soundbars as well. To play music through Spotify Connect, Spotify says users have to first make sure that their Sonos or Bose system is updated to the most advanced firmware. Once they are sure of that, they have to open the Spotify app on their phone, laptop or tablet. They can play any song and then select the 'Devices' icon. Once that is done, they need to select the device that they want to stream from and start listening to the desired song. According to Spotify, incorporating all the devices is a part of their goal, 'to create a truly frictionless experience for our users,' their website says.
